Are We The Best Chiropractor For You?
Internet searches like "chiropractor Howell MI" or "chiropractor near me" will, of course, yeild a list of chiropractors that may be right for you, but how can you tell which one to pick? Chiropractors can have different areas of focus in their practice as well as differing philosophies about chiropractic and health care in general. Some have a more holistic approach and address things important to overall health such as lifestyle and nutrition issues
while others may focus more on the treatment of specific conditions. The best chiropractor near you is the one that is the best fit FOR YOU - the one that provides the type of chiropractic care that you, specifically, are looking for. At our office Dr. Spathis emphasizes the treatment of neuromusculoskeletal and associated conditions like the ones outlined below.
Although we may occasionally address specific issues related to lifestyle, nutrition or other areas, and make appropriate recommendations (especially if they are impacting the condition that we are treating), this is not our primary focus. We do not sell nutritional supplements or provide the type of nutritional testing and/or counseling that some practices may provide.
Our emphasis is trying to resolve the specific presenting complaints of our patients with scientifically based treatments aimed at achieving this goal as much as possible. Although we would love to have you as our patient, we also want you to be happy with having chosen our office. If you did, indeed, find us with a general search like "chiropractors near me", great! Now that you know a little more about our office we hope our chiropractic practice matches the type of care you are looking for. If so, and you are looking for a chiropractor in the Howell, MI area, we think you will be very happy with our office and we will do our best to exceed your expectations.
How Chiropractic Works
Chiropractors use a variety of techniques to help correct problems associated with the structure and function of the spine and extremities. To better understand how this is done, it is helpful to review some basic anatomy. The spine is composed of a number of vertebrae - 7 cervical vertebrae, 12 thoracic vertebrae and 5 lumbar vertebrae - as well as the sacrum and coccyx (or "tailbone"). Each of these spinal segments can have multiple points of articulation with the adjacent segments as well as other body structures such as the skull, ribs and pelvis. In addition to their own important functions, the spine, along with these other bony structures, provide a connection point for other parts of our skeletal system such as our arms and legs (which, of course, are made up of multiple bones, each with their own points of articulation). These articulations (or "joints") are connected together with ligaments and are able to move when muscles crossing over them contract. The muscles themselves attach onto the bones through tendons and contract when given a signal that travels through nerves that come from the brain, travel down the spinal column and leave the spine at specfic levels to go to various parts of the body. (There are some nerves that come directly from the brain without going through the spine (cranial nerves) but that is beyond the scope of our current discussion.) Considering the complexity of this system of nerves, muscles and bones (our "neuromusculoskeletal" system), it is no wonder that problems can develop!
Sometimes joints may not be able to freely move due to problems such as scar tissue accumulation, joint degeneration or muscle spasm. In certain cases the spinal discs between the vertebrae may bulge or "herniate" and put pressure on spinal nerves. Sprain and strain injuries to the ligaments and tendons discussed earlier can not only cause pain but also affect the function of the spinal or extremity segment they are associated with. With this information we can finally answer the question of how a chiropractor can help relieve pain and restore function.
Chiropractors use different forms of spinal or extremity manipulation (chiropractic adjustments) - either hands-on or instrument assisted - to help restore joint movement and function. In addition to adjustments, some chiropractors (such as our office) will use soft tissue techniques to help break apart scar tissue adhesions that may limit joint movement and function, where appropriate, or physical therapy modalities such as mechanical traction to assist in reducing internal spinal disc pressure and helping to treat spinal disc herniations. Ultimately, a chiropractor can offer a structural/mechanical solution to the structural/mechanical causes of musculoskeletal problems such as back pain, neck pain, herniated discs, sciatica, cervicogenic headaches and more. To us, this is a more logical approach than just using medication to address pain, inflammation or muscle spasm without also addressing the underlying cause symptoms and dysfunction.
Chiropractic Treatment We Provide For Common Conditions
Neck & Back Pain
The spine is a complex mechanical structure composed of bones (vertebrae) which articulate with each other at three main sites. Each spinal segment may, therefore, be thought of as a three joint complex with the spinal discs representing the articulation between the bodies of each vertebra at the front of the spine and two "facet joints" at the posterior portion of each spinal segment representing the other two contact points. Lower back pain as well as upper back and neck pain is often the result of spinal joints that get "locked-up" and can't move freely. When the adjacent spinal segments move excessively to compensate, they become irritated and inflammed which
causes the surrounding muscles to spasm to prevent further worsening. In turn, this puts more pressure on the irritated spinal segments which causes more pain and more reflex muscle spasm.
This pain-spasm-pain cycle can be relieved with specifc chiropractic spinal manipulation that restores movement to the segments that are "stuck" thereby addressing the underlying problem and resolving associated symptoms.
This is one of the common mechanisms involved in spine related pain. Our approach involves in finding the mechanism involved in your particular case and working to resolve that specific underlying problem.
Herniated Discs, Sciatica & Spinal Stenosis
Cervical disc herniations can cause neck pain and upper back pain along with arm pain, numbness and tingling. Lumbar disc herniations can cause lower back pain along
with sciatica - pain down the course of the sciatic nerve - or other types of leg symptoms. Spinal stenosis is a condition in which the nerves that come from the spine
get pinched, often from degenerative changes in the spine. This condition can also cause back pain that radiates into the arms or legs, depending on the spinal region involved.
Although these can be difficult conditions to manage, they usually do respond very well to our conservative chiropractic treatment approach and most of our patients can avoid more
invasive procedures such as pain management or surgery. We achieve these results by using a specific type of low-force chiropractic spinal manipulation to reduce disc herniations and open the space around the
spinal nerves that are getting pinched. We often combine this with a specialized type of intermittent traction sometimes referred to as "spinal decompression" (not be be confused with
surgical spinal decompression) that can not only help relieve pressure on spinal nerves but may also help speed up the healing process by improving the flow of nutrients to the spinal discs.
If you have a herniated disc, sciatica or spinal stenosis, give us a call, we may be able to help!
Headaches & Migraines
Our unique approach to the treatment of headaches, including migraines, involves not only treating the spinal segments contributing to the headache but employing an adjunctive soft tissue "pressure point"
type of treatment that has a "blocking effect" on most headaches. This allows the brain to calm down - decreasing the heightened stimulation experienced during a migraine - and the patient can usually leave our
office feeling some degree of immediate relief. Of course, migraines can be difficult to treat and individual responses to any type of treatment - chiropractic or otherwise - can be variable; however, most people will find this to be an effective
option for their headache complaints.
Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction and associated localized jaw pain (TMJ Syndrome) - often just called "TMJ" for the name of the involved joint - is a condition that responds well to appropriate conservative chiropractic care. At our office we treat this by resolving any movement abnormalities in the
joint itself using a very low force "manipulation" procedure as well as specialized soft tissue manipulation of associated musculature that contributes to TMJ dysfunction. Our patients are usually pleased to find this approach
provides much quicker results than other treatments they have tried for this condition.
Back Pain During Pregnancy
Pregnancy related back pain is usually due to a combination of factors that include structural changes as well as the effects of hormones like "relaxin" that, among other things, have a loosening effect on spinal ligaments.
This is important to allow the pelvis to be able to move in a way that allows the baby to be delivered as easily as possible - yes, it would be worse without this hormone! However, this can have a destabilizing effect on the spine, esp. the "sacroiliac joints" on either side of the lower back/pelvis.
The type of low force chiropractic manipulation we provide helps relieve some of the pressure on these joints as well as relax associated muscular structures. If additional compensatory effects or other structural problems are found higher up in the spine, these can also be addressed to relieve any upper back pain or
neck pain that is also common during a pregnancy.
If you suffer from fibromyalgia, you know how sensitive your body can be to even light touch or other stimuli in your environment during acute flair-ups. This is because fibromyalgia affects your nervous system in a way that can lower your pain threshold and cause musculoskeletal pain as well as a host of other symptoms such as fatigue, sleep problems, memory issues and more. The chiropractic care we provide to our fibromyalgia patients is designed to account for your body's increased response to stimuli. We offer both low force hands-on manipulation and instrument assisted adjustments to help improve joint function, relax tight muscles and attempt to decrease your overall nervous system stimulation by reducing the "afferent" (incoming) sensory nerve input. We have found our approach effective in helping many fibromyalgia patients that have not found relief with traditional therapies and hope we can do the same for you. If you are looking for a chiropractor in the Howell, MI area that is experienced in treating patients with fibromyalgia, please give our office a call and we will do our best to help.
Sports related sprains, strains and other injuries of the spine and extremities are experienced to some degree by most athletes. It should be no surprise then that some of the best athletes in the world rely on chiropractic care to keep them functioning at their best, as outlined in this Olympic Games
testimonial "spot". Dr. Spathis has 25+ years of experience providing chiropractic care for sports injuries to athletes of every level. If you need an experienced chiropractor for sports related injuries in the Howell, Michigan area, give our office a call, we will do our best to help resolve your condition and get you back in the game!
No X-Rays Unless Required
As standard x-ray examination does not usually give a chiropractor very much information regarding the ability of joints to move and function, our spinal analysis methods are not based on x-ray but, rather, on a functional assessment. Of course, this does not mean that x-ray examination will never be required. There are times when x-ray examination is appropriate for a variety of reasons - ruling out an underlying condition such as the possibility of fracture following certain types of acute trauma, etc..
We rely on the current accepted medical literature and associated recommendations to assist us in making appropriate decisions regarding further testing requirements, whether this be x-ray, MRI, etc.. For more information about x-ray examination in particular, please click this chiropractic x-ray requirements
link to go directly to our FAQs page in which we review this topic in more detail.
We offer a variety of chiropractic spinal manipulative treatments at our office, including "hands-on" manipulation and "instrument assisted" chiropractic adjustments, as well as adjuctive therapies for specific conditions. Although the applied force will vary to some degree based on the
type of treatment required as well as factors such as patient age and condition, we always use the lowest force possible to achieve our desired treatment result. This approach is both safe and effective as the body tends to offer less resistance to lower force treatments compared to more aggressive interventions thereby maximizing the therapeutic effect. For those who
are worried about chiropractic treatments being painful or uncomfortable, give our office a try - we think you will be pleasantly surprised.
